2004-2005 San Francisco 49ers

This year has not been the best of years for the San Francisco 49ers.  Many of the veterans are gone.  Injuries have ravished the team.  The best player Julian Peterson is out for the the year.  Everyone is underachieving and not living up to the money that was given to them.  So where does this leave the team?  No where.  At least for another 2 years.  It is the belief of the fans that the management has dismantled the team for something they hope to get into the future.

Here are some of the highlights of the year.

NEWSFLASH: January 5, 2005: John York grows some balls and decides to fire Dennis Erickson and Terry Donahue.  Erickson will be paid around $7.5 Million for the remaining 3 years. Donahue, who just signed a 4 yr extension will get a whole lot more.  Now the search for a new coach and GM begins.

Conspiracy Theories

Owner John York and GM Terry Donahue

Why is this happening to the team?  How could a great team fall from grace?  What does the future hold for this once proud franchise.  Here are a few theories about where the franchise is headed:

  1. Move the Team to LA
  2. Raise ticket prices so that when the 49ers because a "good" franchise again, the tickets remain the same.
  3. So what if the 49ers get the 1st overall pick next year in the draft? Do you really think the team will be able to afford to pay the player?
  4. Dennis Erickson (Head coach) will be fired or resigns at the end of the year.  This isn't what he signed up for.  He didn't think the team would be dismantled under him.
  5. Matt Lienart of the National Champions USC will decide to return to USC instead of entering the draft.  He would probably go #1, which of course belongs to the 49ers.  Why would he want to go there?
  6. Now that Erickson is fired, who in their right mind would come to this franchise?

The Future?

John York with his twin daughters

  • At the rate the Niners are going, there will be no 49er Football on TV next year.  The games will NOT sell out.  and the cost cutting ways will prevent the Niners from "buying" the seats back to make the game sold out.
  • The free agents will leave the team.  They don't see a future either.

But Remember... (little bit of hope)

During the first few years of the "Bill Walsh Era", the Niners were doing horrible.  There was no hope.  But with a few good choices and draft picks they were able to make a contender.  The 49er Faithful are spoiled the last 2 decades with winning.  Walsh was able to make something good.  What will this future hold? Only time will tell.

My Apologies...

I keep saying "John York" when it's actually supposed to be "Dr. John York"  I guess this proves that just because you have a PHD, it does not qualify you to run football franchise.
