UFC 94: Penn vs St. Pierre 2

When you're UFC and you make matches every month (sometimes 2x a month) you realize there are some fight cards that are really good, and some that even out and some that aren't that good. Every month you want to make it better, but sometimes you can't.

This month is not one of those months. This month has one of the best Main Events ever.

UFC Lightweight Champion, Former UFC Welterweight Champion "The Prodigy" BJ Penn faces the 2 time Current UFC Welterweight Champion Georges "Rush" St. Pierre. Two champions fighting each other. Two of the top pound-for-pound fighters facing off for the Welterweight Championship. (FYI, Welterweight is 156-170 lbs). This is a rematch fight of a razor thin split decision win by Geroges St. Pierre. That was a back and forth match. And now a rematch for a title.

Will St. Pierre solidify his standing as the best? or will BJ Penn become the first UFC fighter to hold 2 belts, in different weight classes, at the same time in the UFC?

This is a toss up for me. I don't know who to pick. Both fighters are really REALLY good. But I think I will go with Georges St. Pierre. There is no real reason to give. I could say, "his wrestling is good" then you'd say "Penn has great sprawl (countering the takedown)" I have to go with my gut. But no matter what, it'll be a great fight.

The Co Main Event is going to be a good one too. It should determine who is the #1 contender for the Light Heavyweight (186-205) Championship, held by Rashaad Evans. The Matchup is Lyoto Machida (13-0) vs Thaigo Silva (13-0). Machida has skill and smarts. He does alot of Hit-and-Run that fustrate opponents. While it is effective, it is quite BORING. Silva likes to KO people and beat them up, going to decision only once. Obviously a powerful fighter vs a skilled fighter.
This is a hard one to choose too. My guess is Machida will fustrate Silva to decision. Unfortuneately we'll have to deal with a boring fight. In the end "someone's 0 must go."

Why Brock Lesner and not Kimbo Slice?

We're approaching the first ever MMA show on a Major Television station (CBS). Elite XC is putting their show on. The main event features one of the most talked about rookies "Kimbo Slice".
At the same time, former WWE Wrestler Brock Lesner prepares for his 3rd only MMA fight with the UFC. For him, it's a complete love-fest towards the all-american collegiate wrestler.

Why? Why is one fighter hated, and the other fighter loved? Lets take a look:

Kimbo Slice is an internet sensation. he started beating people up on the streets and Backyard brawls. Lo and behold, someone decided to film him and put his videos on YouTube. Suddenly everyone wants to see this guy fight in a MMA event.
I think the reason why people hate on Kimbo Slice so much is the fact that he represents the what the Sport of MMA was and what they (espcially the UFC) is trying to get away from. UFC is trying to get away from the "Human cockfighting" image that they had many years ago. The image of people fighting in the underground, unregulated, and anything goes.

Brock Lesner is practically the exact opposite. He is a clean cut, all american midwest boy. He went to college, got a degree, got collegiate awards. He became a professional, and worked for a major entertainment company, WWE. He performed before live audiences and national television.

In the end the question is asked, is the Hype reasonable? The answer is no. You have 2 rookie fighters who have not proved anything. They do not deserve to be rushed right in to the spot like so quickly. But there is a simple thing that they can do. Go out and win. Prove that they belong here.

WHAT A FIGHT! Frank Shamrock vs Cung Le

Sean (Tisha's Husband) and I went to see Strikeforce / EliteXC MMA event at the San Jose Arena (aka HP Pavilion) It was a very fast and exciting event. With the main event being San Jose's Frank Shamrock vs San Jose's Cung Le, there would be a huge crowd for this event. When we first got there, the place was half filled. and I wondered if it was really sold out. but by the main event the place was PACKED TO THE RAFTERS. (Sorry Eddie, you didn't get tickets!).

The Event was fast, mainly because the fights all went to stoppages. Only one decision in the preliminary bouts, and we missed that.
  • First Match was a knock out at 4:15 of the first Round
  • 2nd Match was a Armbar submission at 0:44 of the first round.
  • 3rd match was Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez title defence. Melendez DOMINATED this match. He got his opponent on the ground and pounded him out the first round, and the start of the 2nd round. the opponent gave up in the 2nd, just being pounded. both his eyes wer black and blue.
  • 4th Match featured Drew Fickett, former UFC fighter. He stopped his opponent quickly in the first round with a Gullitine choke.
And now the Main Event. And I looked at my watch. It was only 7:30. Only 1 hr and a half passed since the start. and we're already at the Main Event!

Amazing fight by these two. It was back and forth. I loved it. in the 3rd round I can tell the kick rocked Shamrock. He was backpeddling and staggering. And when the bell rang, he stumbled back to his corner and collapsed to a knee. I knew he was hurt. And then Cung Le started jumping up and down. I knew it was over.

I looked at my watch, 8:00. 5 fights in 2 hours. great time, but I was planning to stay out till 10!

So we watched the final Prelim. Marlon Sims, the TUF who got kicked out, who claimed he fought over 9000 street fights. Claimed he fought 4-5 people at one time. Got knocked out in the 3rd round. it wasn't a good match, it was quite boring.

"Quick" vs "Crippler" A fight I wish we could see...

The Ultimate Fighter (season) 1 fighters Mike "Quick" Swick vs Chris "the Crippler" Leban. Swick's first loss was from Leban. And during TUF1, Leban made sure Swick remembered the loss.

"Any Time Any Place"

So the Ultimate Fight Night is coming up. and the major rumor was Swick vs Leban. Its the fight everyone wants to see. It's been brewing since the loss and intensified in TUF1. UFC was ready for it. Swick is ready to avenge his loss. Leban... obviously wasn't ready. he didn't sign, and fans all over are disappointed.
I wanted to see this fight. I think avenge bouts are great. and Leban talked alot of trash, but backing out means he talks the talk, but don't walk the walk.

Swick moves on to fight someone else Goullet, on the card. Then, to put on the insult, Leban decides he's going to fight on the card too.
Well, I sure hope you put these 2 on opposite sides of the arena. I'm sure a whole lot of trash talking will be done between them if they are in the same room. We could have Ultimate fight Locker rooms.

I'm afraid Swick is going to have to move on and realize that he won't be able to avenge his loss, but also know that he's going up, while Leban is going down, and if he loses again, out of UFC.

UFC 65: Bad Intentions

My crazy weekend started leaving for Sacramento on Friday. Matt and I stayed at my Grandmother's home so that we can go to UFC 65, LIVE at the Arco Arena, in Sacramento, CA.

I had a great time. There were lots and lots of hot, top notch, beautiful girls running around. Of course they were all with their boyfriends. Or they were checking out the fighters. But the girls were all stunning and beautiful.

Anyways on to the fights. The first Prelim was pretty boring. but it picked up. The next few fights had knockouts or tapouts. Wins by James Irvin (from Sacramento), Nick Diaz (Stockton), Brandon Vera over Frank Mir, and Joe Stevenson getting a Gullitine choke submission.

Then we get to the first Championship Match between Tim Sylvia (champ) vs Jeff Monsoon (challenger). This was a boring match. Sylvia was taller and dictated the pace and blocked Monsoon's attempt to take him down. After 5 boring rounds,Syvia won by decision.

And now the Main Event. Welterweight Championship match between Matt Hughes (Champ) vs George St. Pierre. St. Pierre is definately an up and coming. This match was exciting. St. Pierre almost pulled off the win in the first round, after landing a jumping fist. It happened under 10 seconds left so the bell saved Hughes. The second round St. Pierre landed a few kicks and punches. then a shin kick to the side of the head of Hughes, knocking him down. And then St. Pierre punched then elbowed his face until the Ref stepped in:A new Champion. George St. Pierre!!! That was an awesome fight and an awesome finish.
