A "Rodney King" beatdown :(
A rough night on Wednesday. 2 Incidents happened at Mission Ale. the first wasn't as serious as the 2nd. The first one was just a drunk guy who pissed off the bartendress and she wanted him out.
The SECOND incident is a lot worse. So I'm chilling listing to the music when all of the sudden I see this Police Car come down 3rd Street... going the WRONG DIRECTION. With lights flashing it makes a left down Santa Clara and pulls into the opposite way traffic. I'm thinking WOW that's crazy. Then I see a BIG black (afro American) guy running down the street. Now I'm thinking "We gotta runner!" The guy stops, probably realizing that it's hopeless (DUH). He puts his arms out and gets on the ground. Meanwhile an officer was on foot during the chase catches up with the guy. Then with one of the officers holding the man down, the other officer pulls out his night stick and takes 2-3 good shots to the body. By this time there's like 10 people standing outside of Mission watching this. Holy Shit. At first I thought, maybe there was something in his hand and they weren't sure what it was about. And the officer told him to let go of it, but didn't. The guy was out, knocked senseless. Suddenly like 3 more cop cars and a police truck are pulling up too. At that time I decided that it was better to go inside. Nothing else was going to happen with like 10 police officers.
As it turns out, it is a regular at Mission. His name (or nickname) is Diesel. This guy was big, like 6'2", 300lbs. I'm glad he didn't fight back. Niko (who works at mission) started screaming at the cops, which made Matt pull him back and calm him down.
So on Thursday I go into Mission to meet up with Katie. I run into Justice and tell him that he missed a crazy night (he normally works on Wed). He tells me he knows and tells me what he heard. Diesel was driving, possibly Niko was in the car too. The cops pulled him over for some reason. And then for whatever reason after that, Diesel RUNS! At which case, if Niko was in the car, I don't know how he was able to get out (which is kinda why I don't know if he was in the car). Apparently Diesel ran 2 blocks, past the side of Mission. The cop apparently used excessive force on him. His nightstick busted his teeth and dislocated his shoulder. Diesel went to the hospital, and then went to jail. And, as of last night, was still in jail. The police seem to keep lowering the bail, and lowering the charges, probably hoping that the "excessive use" would be forgotten or forgiven.
That was definitely a damper on the night, to know that a friend (not direct friend of mine, but friend of the bar) was seen, in front of the bar, beaten up by the police.
Now before someone thinks that this is testimony or anything, just remember I was drinking and I couldn't point out the cop if my life depended on it. Was there excessive force, I think so. The guy was down on the ground. But maybe he had done something that triggered the officer. Or maybe that's why he went to Mission, because he knew he could get a crowd and a whole lot of witnesses.
In the end, the City might have to pay alot for this beat down.
